On 12th February, 1917, 12th King’s Royal Rifle Corps of 60 Brigade, 20th Division, moved into the front line trenches in the Lesboeufs sector of the Somme. That evening the enemy made a bombing attack on their lines and although they were driven off, three men were killed and another seven were wounded. The following day, 13th February, the Germans maintained a steady artillery and trench mortar bombardment of  the trenches held by 12th King’s Royal Rifle Corps and once again the battalion suffered casualties. Four men were killed and fifteen were wounded. One of those killed was James Goodwin. His death is recorded as 14th February, 1917, by which time they had been relieved and were back in huts at Carnoy, but it is very likely that he was one of those killed during this two days in the trenches.
